Refurbishment and Extension of St Giles SchoolPrint Case Study

Value: £500,000
Duration: 42 weeks
Project Managers: Mouchel

St Giles School provides day care for children with severe physical disabilities and learning/medical needs. The project involved the construction of a new single-storey extension to the existing building.

The new extension comprised toilet/welfare facilities, teaching space, catering facilities and communal areas.
Each room in the new extension was equipped with harnesses to aid the carers in lifting and moving the children, which required steel joists to be put into place to carry the required loads. A sensory room was created in the extension with specialist equipment to provide stimulus for the children’s senses including lights, sounds, temperature changes and smells. Furthermore the teaching and welfare areas were fitted with both panic alarms and sinks/desks which lowered and raised at the touch of a button to aid the children using the facilities.

Both children and staff at St Giles School remained in occupation throughout the work. Work was carefully planned and phased to ensure minimal disruption to the school. All works requiring the joining of the extension to the existing building (creating noise, dust and vibration) were carried out outside of the school teaching time either out-of-hours or during school holidays.
