Somerset House is a Grade II listed, arts and culture centre located in central London.

Running concurrently with Phase 1, (130 room office refurbishment), we carried out the demolition and structural alterations works for Phase 2 – the creation of the Miles Staircase.

The Miles Staircase involved the installation of an Eva Jiricna designed staircase, accessing five-floors of the main building. In order to create the stairwell, sections of the existing five-floors were removed with new openings formed to provide access to the new staircase. The project involved the removal of 140T of masonry to allow the new stairwell to be created.

Following completion of all structural works, Coniston oversaw the installation of the new feature staircase.

All works, including the demolition and considerable structural alterations were carried out whilst the building was in occupation.

This project won the ‘Small Projects’ Award at the 2014 Structural Awards and was highly commended in the ACE Engineering Excellence Awards.
