We undertook the construction of a new build 1095m2 art gallery on Hastings seafront to permanently house the Jerwood Collection. The building sits among the unique Hastings net huts, on the edge of the working fishing beach.

The gallery features seven permanent galleries, a temporary gallery / exhibition space, a sculpture courtyard, cafe, education space, library and shop. The exterior of the building incorporates over 8000 ceramic black pewter tiles, hand finished by a local supplier in Kent designed to compliment itssurroundings of the black net huts. The exterior incorporates flush, frameless glazing designed to reflect the light and provide a shimmering surface to the building.

The main Gallery has a raw, industrial ambience with exposed concrete ceilings and polished concrete floors, creating a large gallery space which can be used for temporary or visiting exhibitions. The main staircase continues this industrial theme with a pre-cast concrete design and inset terrazzo treads. The upper floor houses the Jerwood Collection and Webbe’s Café and has a retractable glass wall, providing diners with an ‘al-fresco’ cafe experience.
