St James’s Palace, Residential Refurbishment

Value: £456,000
Duration: 16 weeks
Quantity Surveyor: Huntley Cartwright

St James’s Palace was built by Henry VIII between 1531 and 1536. The Palace is Grade 1 listed, and administered by the Royal Household Estate.

This project involved the initial strip out of the residential apartment, followed by a complete refurbishment, including lighting, underfloor heating, bespoke joinery kitchens and bathrooms.

English Heritage placed a ‘Watching Brief’ on the excavation works to ensure that all activities were carried out without damage, and any items of historical interest that were potentially uncovered were carefully monitored. Of particular interest was one of the only original Henry VIII walls remaining in the building.

All staff undertaking work at the Royal Household are required to adhere to strict security measures, including being counter-terrorism checked before they are allowed on site.
