Working at the British Museum, Coniston delivered access improvement structural alterations, roof replacement works and refurbishments to internal areas within the Islamic Galleries.
Access improvements consisted of creating new levels into a lightwell, constructing a staircase and installation of a lift to connect 2 separate galleries and library floors.
Works to the roof required the removal and replacement of roof lights, specialist lead work, creation of new access hatches and installation of environmental controls to the windows, to assist the climate control of the building and the protection of the artefacts. We also installed a brise soleil roof layer, allowing natural brightness whilst also protecting the artefacts from light damage.
Internal refurbishment involved extensive repairs to badly damaged roof plaster work (with specialist work to ornate mouldings), glazed brickwork repairs, installation of modern infrastructure for building services improvements, installation of case conditioning and fire protection systems, trench heating, ambient lighting and showcase lighting. We also installed structural steelwork in preparation for show cases to be installed and completed all decorating finishes (including welsh blue slate flooring and creation of a feature wall).
