Canterbury Cathedral, ‘Canterbury Journey’

Value: £4,000,000
Duration: 5 years
Architect: Purcell
Quantity Surveyor: Artelia

In 2018, Coniston secured the re-roofing, conservation and renovation project at Canterbury Cathedral.

The Grade I listed Cathedral is a historic landmark, dating back to 1020 and part of a World Heritage Site.

The Cathedral is often described as ‘England in stone’ as its history is intrinsically linked to the country’s history, it has been a place of worship for more than 1,400 years.

This milestone project involves the installation of a temporary roof over the Nave of the Cathedral to allow for the removal of the existing roof. The existing lead that is being removed, is to be re-cast off-site and re-used as part of the new installation.

The existing timbers will be subject to specialist repairs using Pitch Pine, Douglas Fir and English Oak.

The project is due to be carried out over five-years with a full programme to replace the roof over the nave, adjacent aisles and the roofs over the towers.
