Imperial War Museum, Art Storage Facility

Value: £820,000
Duration: 24 weeks
Architect: BDP
Quantity Surveyor: Gardiner & Theobald

The Grade II Listed Imperial War Museum in London is dedicated to the coverage of conflicts, especially those involving Britain and the Commonwealth, from the First World War to the present day.

This project involved the alteration and adaptation of an existing space within the museum to create an arts storage facility. Coniston carried out the initial strip-out of the space subsequently installing the specialist storage equipment. The equipment allows art not on display to the public to be securely stored in accessible racks protecting them from the elements. The storage equipment is light, humidity and temperature controlled to ensure the protection of the art within.

Similarly to all Coniston’s museum projects, works were carried out whilst the museum remained open and operational.

Following the refurbishment of the storage facility, we secured two further projects at The Imperial War Museum. The first was to redecorate and modernise the basement male and female changing rooms; the second was to likewise redecorate the second floor offices.
