The British Museum, Round Reading Room Restoration
Value: £630,000
Duration: 20 weeks
Working under the six-year framework agreement, we completed works to restore the Round Reading Room at The British Museum back to its original state.
The Round Reading Room sits at the centre of the Grade I listed Museum. Designed in 1857 by Sydney Smirke the Reading Room is a library famous for welcoming Karl Marx, Oscar Wilde and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle among others.
We were the contractor responsible for originally stripping out and refurbishing the Round Reading Room to create a temporary exhibition space – initially used to welcome the Terracotta Warriors in 2007.
Following numerous exhibitions over the years, we have now removed the temporary exhibition space (including stage decking, Steel framework, AHUs and accessibility lifts) to return the Round Reading Room to its original design.
In addition to the above works we were also required to remove the blackout film from the windows (20) and redecorate via a spider lift located in the Great Court.
