Victoria & Albert Museum, Fashion Gallery Refurbishment

Value: £900,000
Duration: 31 weeks
Architect: 6a Architects

We carried out the major renovation of Gallery 40, which houses the Museum’s fashion collection. The Fashion Gallery shows European fashion, fabrics and accessories from 1750 to the present day.

The main aim of the project was to reveal and restore the original historic features of the Gallery. The Gallery was completely refurbished with works including a new (DDA compliant), bespoke platform lift, a new staircase and balustrading, and the renovation of the mezzanine floor. The original showcases were refurbished, whilst the columns were stripped back and restored to their original condition.

A large birdcage scaffold enabled the installation of the bespoke new lighting system, which is suspended on cables from the existing dome structure. A new balcony was formed to enable the viewing of the exhibition from adjacent galleries.
