Wellcome Trust Collection Café Refurbishment

Value: £200,000
Duration: 7 weeks
Architect: Casson Mann
Quantity Surveyor: Fraser Randall

We completed the refurbishment project of the front entrance and cafe area. This involved the construction and installation of a new feature plasterboard and GRG ceiling with ambient lighting. This included the provision of theatrical lighting and 216 bespoke LED lights on drop rods with sandblasted chemical flasks as shades.

In order to ensure day-to-day use of the building was not disrupted it was agreed with the client that all works would be scheduled out of normal working hours.

All furniture was removed from the work area on a nightly basis. Both the reception desk and servery counter were sheeted and protected with a plywood ‘coffin’ box and the space leading to the adjacent lift lobby and bookshop were sealed off using 4500mm high fire rated Protecta Screen. Access plant was carefully selected to ensure that wheels were non-marking rubber.

Works were programmed to ensure that the space could be cleared, thoroughly cleaned, and furniture repositioned and left operational every morning.
