The Wallace Collection, Great Gallery Refurbishment

Value: £2,845,000
Duration: 68 weeks
Architect: Purcell
Quantity Surveyor: Alan Pfeffer Associates

The Great Gallery of The Wallace Collection houses some of their most famous pieces of art, including works by Canaletto and Frans Hals The Laughing Cavalier.

The aim of the project was the refurbishment of the museum’s largest gallery including raising the height of the ceiling on the gallery to allow natural light into the space. The project required the existing roof to be removed and a new roof constructed in its place. The ceiling below the roof was a barrel vault with a basket weave design cast into each section. Due to this design the corners of the room were required to meet at 90 degrees within zero tolerance. The final room (and roof) measures 35m by 15m and was completed within the required tolerances.

The Gallery was fully refurbished and finished to the highest standards. There is extensive gilding throughout the ceilings, doors and joinery with a rich red silk hung on the walls.

This project continued our history of work at the Wallace Collection where we have been working for over seven years during which time we have completed four gallery refurbishments, created a new front entrance and shop, and refurbished a number of central public areas.
