The Sylvia Young Theatre School, Remodelling

Value: £3,500,000
Duration: 60 weeks
Architect: Judd Architecture
Quantity Surveyor: Andrews & Boyd

We completed the £3,500,000 conversion project at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London, which entailed the transformation of an existing church, located in a conservation area, into a performing arts school.

Demolition of the two existing floors was undertaken, and a 120 ton steel frame installed. The new frame created five new floors within the walls of the existing church to provide teaching and administration areas, laboratories, catering & welfare facilities and performing studios. The rooms were acoustically treated to meet the airborne noise requirements of BB93. Comfort cooled by VRF and heated by radiators; the system provides students with an all year temperate environment. The attic contains IT workshops and science laboratories, art studios and music rooms. The ground floor has a canteen space and fully operational kitchen. The basement areas contain stores and workshops for staging and includes the main heating plant.
